Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves.  A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.  Ecclesiastes 4:12

This passage speaks of the covenant made between God, husband and wife. Covenants set up the whole framework of our faith.  God is a covenant making, covenant keeping and covenant fulfilling God and he takes these divine agreements seriously. The three cord strand is not easily broken because the strength and the power is in the promise the Lord has bound himself to.

God sees marriages as sacred because the union reflects his relationship with his bride, the church.  The bible gives us spiritual truths and tools to help us face crisis while the Holy Spirit guides and teaches us.  When there is a breach in our relationship with the Lord we end up relying on our fallen nature which takes us far off course.
